Aerial view of Chilbolton Observatory, taken in 2006Welcome to the Chilbolton Facility for Atmospheric and Radio Research (CFARR) at the STFC Chilbolton Observatory in the UK.

Chilbolton as a Ground Validation site suitable for the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Mission,

  • a large array of instruments for making rainfall measurements.

  • proven base for international atmospheric research campaigns involving use of multiple aircraft , e.g. CLARE (1998), CSIP (2004-5)

  • close collaboration with Met Office, and other UK agencies which would provide a large network of raingauges and radars around Chilbolton

  • provides ground validation for FAAM aircraft observations

  • the ability to provide satellite calibration and validation, as shown by the recent NCAVEO field campaign (2006), CloudSat, CALYPSO, MODIS

  • space to accomodate visiting instruments and scientists

  • scientists and engineers with expertise in the field of radar meteorology

  • a 4.5m satellite tracking station

  • an established track record over many years

All the data gathered at CFARR are quality controlled and converted to a standard data format, NetCDF. This data is released through the British Atmospheric Data Centre (BADC), which caters for thousands of users.

In 2003 we hosted the the 1st International GPM Ground Validation Meeting. The final report, presentations and photos from the event are all available to view on this website by following this link 1st International GPM GV Meeting
