Note: Sat-nav systems, if they direct you to approach via the A30, often send you on a route that bypasses Chilbolton village but includes a long stretch of an unpaved road only suitable for 4WD vehicles. Make sure to approach the Observatory via Chilbolton village - that way you will only experience a short stretch of the unpaved road!

... M3 (London/Basingsoke/The East)
From the M3 West-bound, follow A303 signed to Andover.
Follow directions as "A34/A303", leaving A303 at B3048 (Wherwell).
... from the A34/A303(W-bound) (Oxford/Basingstoke/Southampton/The
North)
From the A34 take the A303 exit West-bound for Andover. Leave the
A303 at the fourth junction (B3048 signposted to Wherwell). Continue
until reaching the village of Wherwell, at the give-way sign turn left
crossing a small bridge, onto the B3420. Immediately after the road
turns a left corner there is a road on the right signed to Chilbolton.
Follow the road through Chilbolton passing the Abbot's Mitre pub on
the left and village shop on the right. Take the next road left, Drove
Road. Follow this road until it bears right, at which point continue
straight ahead along an unmade road. After approximately 500 metres you will
see the entrance to the observatory on the right.
... from A303(E-bound)
From A303 either leave at A3057 junction (signed Stockbridge) - follow
directions as Andover or remain on the A303 past Andover and take the
B3048 exit immediately after the service station, signed Wherwell. Just
after turning the slip road corner take the road on the left and cross
over the A303. At the next junction turn right towards Wherwell, continue
until reaching Wherwell village - follow directions as A34/A303 W-bound.
... from the A3057 (Andover)
Leave Andover on A3057 towards Stockbridge. Follow this road away
from Andover towards Stockbridge, for approimately 5 miles. As you enter
Fullerton and cross the River Test you will see the "Mayfly"
pub on the right hand side. Immediately after the bridge take the left
turn signed Chilbolton. Enter the village and take the 3rd right into
Drove Road (signed to the Observatory). Follow this road until it bears
right, at which point continue straight ahead along an unmade road.
After approximately 500 metres you will see the entrance to the observatory
on the right.
... from the A30 (Winchester/Sutton Scotney)
Drivers with vehicles over 7.5T see note below. Take the A30 towards
Stockbridge, approximately 1 mile after the Hill Farm crossroads (Winchester/Wherwell),
take the road on the right signed to Chilbolton Observatory (Martin's
Lane). Continue until reaching a give-way junction, here turn left and
follow the road into the village, turning left and the next junction
signed to Leckford and Stockbridge. Pass the Abbot's Mitre pub on the
left and village shop on the right. Take the next road left, Drove Road.
Follow this road until it bears right, at which point continue straight
ahead along an unmade road. After approximately 500 metres you will see the
entrance to the observatory on the right.
... from the A30/A3057 (Romsey/Stockbridge)
Take the A3057 away from Stockbridge towards Andover/Leckford. Pass
through Leckford and on entering Fullerton take the right turn, immdiately
before the bridge over the River Test (near Mayfly pub), signed Chilbolton.
Enter the village and take the 3rd right into Drove Road (signed to
the Observatory). Follow this road until it bears right, at which point
continue straight ahead along an unmade road. After approximately 500 metres
you will see the entrance to the observatory on the right.
Note for drivers with vehicles over 7.5T
Drivers with vehicles over 7.5T following A30 directions should be
aware of following route amendment as weight restrictions apply to certain
approach roads. Drivers should NOT turn right at the Chilbolton Observatory
sign, but continue to Stockbridge, where at the roundabout should take
the A3057 towards Andover/Leckford - Follow directions as A30/A3057
(Romsey/Stockbridge).
